Shouldn't Spain give Olivença back to Portugal?

Olivenza (Spanish) or Olivença (Portuguese) is a town in the autonomous community of Extremadura, situated on a disputed section of the border between Portugal and Spain. Olivenza is claimed by both countries and is currently administrated by Spain.

Olivenza had been under undisputed Portuguese sovereignty since 1297 until it was occupied by the Spanish in 1801, and formally ceded by Portugal, after being invaded and defeated by Spain at the War of the Oranges, later that year by the Treaty of Badajoz.

Spain claims the "de jure" sovereignty over Olivenza on the grounds that the Treaty of Badajoz still stands and has never been revoked. Thus, the border between the two countries in the region of Olivenza should be as demarcated by that treaty. Though, the terms of the very Treaty of Badajoz undoubtedly state that if war was ever to again occur between the two countries, then the Treaty would be void. And that happened when Spain itself later invaded Portugal.

Hi Graham,

In my opinion, it isn’t moment to claim or complain grounds in the European Union. We need to unite together. It’s necessary to join everything, people, countries, grounds, companies and politicians. I want to say everything without the United Kingdom, of course, sorry. No, seriously, the United Kingdom is in Europe, therefore, all countries should join in one only. They should be one to get more employment, rights, freedom, culture, holidays, researches, the journeys across the Solar System, to live in the galaxy of Andrómeda, for instance, and so on.
It’s the same that Olivenza was of Portugal of Spain. In the Universe there are millions upon millions of stars and I suppose that we can’t see the Earth from the galaxy Andrómeda because it’s so, so tiny.

On the other hand, where are the islands of the Outer Hebrides (Lewis, Harris, Berneray, North and South Uist, Benbecula and Eriskay)? It’s the first time that I have heard anything about them. Sorry, I’m slow at geography.

See you.

Hi José,

I posted this because the Spanish government is always banging on about Gibraltar. As well as Olivença, I think Spanish sovereignty over Celta, Mellila and rocks like Perejil is highly questionable.

It makes no difference if Olivenza belongs to Portugal or Spain. In the Universe there are millions upon millions of stars and I suppose that we can’t see the Earth from the galaxy Andrómeda because it’s so, so tiny.

Changing subject / By the way, where are the islands of the Outer Hebrides (Lewis, Harris, Berneray, North and South Uist, Benbecula and Eriskay)? It’s the first time that I have heard of them. Sorry, I’m hopeless at geography / Geography isn't my forte.

Google them. Don't be lazy. :D
